It’s all things that have been said before.
- Finish school.
- Persue higher education or a trade.
- Get a ‘good enough’ job.
Or if you’re more of a family person.
- Finish schooling.
- Fall in love with ‘your person.’
- Get married.
- Have children.
I’m obviously not saying that these paths are mutually exclusive, or that they don’t intertwine.
But more often than not we are all being pushed towards the ideal way of life.
I personally have gotten so much anxiety, purely because I am worried of choosing the wrong path.
But that’s where the lie is!
We barely give ourselves the moment to breathe and to consider what actually inspires and satisfies our lives.
There is no such thing as the right and wrong paths. In the grand scheme of things, nothing actually matters.
Everyone has a lot of opinions on how they want to live their lives and be remembered, regardless of their upbringing, religion, & life experiences.
As humans we naturally have that urge to want to be in control of our lives and because one person1 came up with a blueprint that had worked for them, it has now been imposed onto all of us.
But being happy and having true enjoyment in your life should be ‘the real goal.’
You’re so lucky if what you want is also on the ‘reccomended path’.
Because of your privilege, you don’t have to choose between your true self and the world.
You don’t have to hide in order to be truly living.2
- I understand that it wasn’t literally one person that came up with the sole idea of ‘the ideal life’, and that the idea grew organically among multiple generations due to a variety of factors. ↩︎
- This piece was inspired by a recent writing exercise in one of my university seminars. The prompt was ‘What Is Your Version of The Australian Dream’ – would love to talk further on this topic with you within the comments below! ↩︎
